Our oceans are home to an incredible amount of wildlife, but plastic pollution continues to threaten marine animals and the ecosystems they depend on. That’s why The Ocean Cleanup is one of the organizations we’re proud to support.
Founded in 2013, The Ocean Cleanup is a nonprofit organization focused on developing and scaling technology to remove plastic from oceans and rivers around the world. Their goal is to clean up 90% of floating ocean plastic pollution by 2040.
Cleaning Up What’s Already There
One part of The Ocean Cleanup’s work focuses on plastic that has already made its way into the ocean. Their technology is currently being used in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a massive accumulation zone of floating plastic between Hawaii and California.
Plastic pollution can be especially harmful to marine wildlife. Animals can mistake plastic for food, become entangled in discarded fishing gear, or be exposed to increasingly small pieces of plastic as larger debris breaks down into microplastics.
The Ocean Cleanup has been removing plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch since 2019 and continues working to improve the efficiency of its cleanup systems.
Stopping Plastic Before It Reaches the Ocean
Cleaning up existing pollution is only part of the solution. The Ocean Cleanup also works in rivers to stop plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place.
The organization says that approximately 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of riverine plastic pollution, which is why its Interceptor technology is designed to capture floating waste before it can continue downstream.
Their approach combines technology with local partnerships, working with governments, organizations, and operators to develop cleanup systems suited to individual rivers and communities.
